Tino Sehgal
A Session with Tino Sehgal
Course Detail
DescriptionLondon-born and Berlin-based artist Tino Sehgal is best known for his “situations,” which are artworks that rely on interplays between the visitors and those enacting the work. Adopting elements from the worlds of choreography, economy, politics, and art, Sehgal’s pieces entail different forms of participation, which change according to the unique experience of each visitor. In this live presentation, the artist shares some of the influences behind his distinctive creative approach, giving the audience a peek into his practice which favors repeatability and temporality over physicality and permanence.Meet the PresenterTino SehgalTino Sehgal is a groundbreaking artist who has made a name for himself by challenging the conventions of traditional art. Born in the early 21st century, Sehgal has taken a unique approach to his practice, rejecting the creation of tangible art objects in favor of ephemeral, choreographed “constructed situations”.
With a background in dance and a deep understanding of economics, Sehgal has developed a practice that explores the concept of value and the abundance of material possessions in our society. He believes that there is an excess of “stuff” in the world, and he seeks to disrupt this notion through his work.
Sehgal’s art is not meant to be experienced through the traditional lens of a museum or gallery. Instead, he creates immersive experiences that challenge viewers to engage with the work on a deeper level. His pieces are enacted by “players” who dance, sing, and engage in conversation with each other and the audience. Through these interactions, Sehgal creates a different value system, one that is based on actions and social encounters rather than material possessions.
By eschewing the creation of physical objects, Sehgal is able to explore the boundaries of what art can be. His work exists solely in the present moment, and once the performance is over, it becomes a memory. This ephemeral nature adds to the allure and mystique of Sehgal’s art, as it can only be experienced by those who were present at the time of its creation.
Sehgal’s work has garnered international acclaim and has been exhibited at prestigious institutions around the world. His thought-provoking installations have been featured at museums such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Through his innovative approach to art-making, Sehgal continues to challenge the boundaries of the art world and redefine what it means to create meaningful and engaging experiences for viewers.
