“My name is So Kim, I was born in South Korea— raised in Hong Kong and in Shanghai, China. My works are reflections of myself presented in different forms of animals and creatures. Growing up, I suffered from severe eczema for about 12+ years. It restricted me from having any pets in the household other than fish. My parents gradually allowed me to have small pets, such as turtles, small mammals and reptiles—eventually we got our first family dog at age 12. Because of the restriction I had, my urge and love for animals grew uncontrollably overtime. Being an only child, I have coped with thanatophobia for as long as I can remember —which took a turn, as I became heavily reliant on my pets, as they became siblings and family. Till today, I am currently living with three geckos and one dog in my Brooklyn studio apartment. My best friend, Uma (my dog) has been the source of my sanity—ever-since living alone in New York for the past 5 years from age 18 to current day. Overtime, I have found peace with solitude, as loneliness or solitude is one’s choice.”
Artist Bio: So Kim (b. 1995) is South Korean born multi-disciplinary artist. She received a BFA in Fine Arts from the Parsons School of Design. Kim’s works are presented with explosive, vibrant colors —seemingly playful and uplifting, but simultaneously reflects the solitude of self. Kim portrays her inner-self in different forms of animals and creatures, along with her ‘best friend’, Uma. Kims' works focus on the inability of communication, ordinarily emotionally charged and internally driven. Used to visualize reality— the attempt of dialogue, the discordant relation between subject and content and the dysfunctions of language. In short, the lack of clear references are key elements in the work. Again and again, the artist leaves us orphaned with a mix of conflicting feelings and thoughts. So Kim currently lives and works in New York.
