Peggy Buth
Alfred, Alfried & Andre, 2017
Peggy Buth, *1971, lives and works in Berlin
In her artistic work, Peggy Buth does not commit herself to a specific medium or a narrow concept of art, but rather examines the systems of representation in art, literature, and politics, history and sciences with regard to what is repressed in them and what unintentionally comes to light. In doing so, she makes use of the media of photography and video, uses tar, Shellac or carpets for her pictures, works with found materials, language and sound, produces objects, sculptures and installations.
Her work “Alfred, Alfried & Andre” is part of the group of works “Politics of Selection - The Benefit of Fear”.
(2014 - ongoing) in which Buth deals with the social conditions of the city of Essen, which are connected deeply with the activities of the company of Friedrich Krupp AG (now ThyssenKrupp AG). On display are original cast iron plaques of the family (Friedrich and son Alfried Krupp), which were created in the early 1960s to mark the 150th anniversary of the Krupp company. With
“Andre” in the title and the sculptural placement of the plaques on the gallery floor Buth references the US-American sculptor Carl Andre and his “floor sculptures”, which he also called “zones”.
or “territories”. In this way, two different narratives are combined in a humorous way on artistic and capitalist appropriation of space.
