SESC Pompéia stools, 1980
Lina Bo Bardi focused on developing what she called ‘poor architecture’ (which referred to a kind of pre-craftmanship and humbler means in archi- tecture) most famously exemplified in São Paulo by the conversion she did of a steel drum factory into SESC Pompéia (1977-1986), a sports and cultural centre.
Also in her furniture designs Lina applied the ideas of ‘poor architecture’. For the SESC Pompéia. She created a variety of pinus elliottii furnishings, a reforestation species, to make them very durable. Her friend, the chemical engineer Vinicio Callia of the company Laminarco had long researched this material. This wood could be used when young, around eight years old, treated and bonded with a secret chemical formula, turning this Laminarco patent into a precursor of lamellar wood.
