Navine G. Khan Dossos at Fridman Gallery
Fridman Gallery presents a site-specific installation of British artist Navine G. Khan Dossos’s series Infoesque (2017). Consisting of nine gouache paintings, the installation explores the design strategies of Rumiyah Magazine, a publication aimed at recruiting new operatives for ISIS. The paintings focus on the calculated use of authoritative aesthetics deployed in the magazine’s self-branding. Islamic arabesques are juxtaposed with data visualizations from military campaigns, and calligraphic swirls with warnings of hell fire. Khan-Dossos has reduced the content to columns and blocks of color where text and image once were, giving physical presence to a propaganda device that, as a downloadable file, remains ephemeral and corruptible.
